What is good website content?

Everybody constantly talks about the importance of good website content but few people really seem to be clear on what it means. Writing for the web is not the same as other forms of writing because there are several different things that you want to accomplish with your content. The first thing that web content has to do is be interesting to your visitors. This should seem obvious but if you have spent any time on the web you have certainly come across plenty of content that is not interesting. In fact in many cases it will seem like the content was never intended to be read, that's because is wasn't. A lot of the content that appears on the web is written solely for the search engines. The problem is that while this may get you visitors they are unlikely to stay on your site if the content there is all low quality.

While your first priority does have to be to make your content interesting for your visitors you do have to keep the search engines in mind. The search engines follow a specific algorithm to determine what a page is about and you have to make sure that you write your content with this in mind. The good news is that the algorithms are now good enough that things like keyword density are no longer issues when writing content. The main thing is to make sure that each page sticks to one specific topic, you don't want the search engines to be unclear about what your site is about.

Another thing that good website content should do is to encourage people to visit your site. This is related to having interesting content but it does take more than that. The big thing is to make sure that you have a good tittle for each page since this is what people are going to see in the search results. You will also find that if you write on a controversial topic or express a strong opinion you will get more visitors. You will also tend to get more visitors for pages that are numbered lists of things, people apparently prefer to read these.

The last thing that your website content has to do is to get your message across. If you are trying to make sales from your site then you need to have content that gets people to buy. If you are looking to provide information on your site then you need to make sure that you provide it in a clear way that people want to read. Almost certainly you built your site for some purpose, the content that you put on that site needs to help accomplish it.
