The other big reason that you need to have a well designed website is that it will make you look more professional. Even if you are just running a small business people expect to see a site that looks like it was designed by a professional. If not they are not going to take you seriously which makes it very unlikely that they are going to become customers. People are a lot more sophisticated about their web use these days and they know when a site looks like it was designed by a professional and when it doesn't, you have to make sure that your site doesn't turn your visitors off.

Another reason that you need to make sure that you have a well designed website is so that you can accomplish your goals with the site. Obviously you built the site for a reason, usually it is to make sales. That means that you have to have a site that is designed in a way that makes this happen. If you are selling a product directly from your site for example you want to make sure that your visitors can find and buy the product easily. If your site doesn't accomplish what it was intended to do there is little reason to have one.

Good web design also has to factor in search engine optimization. There is little reason to have a website if nobody ever visits. The best way to get traffic to your site is from the search engines. The problem is that there is a lot of competition for the top rankings in the search engines. There are certain things that can be done when designing the website to help your site to rank near the top. Clearly this will help your site to get more visitors so it is something that you have to make sure that you do.
